Amanda Knox trial was flawed at every turn, says appeal judge

The Amanda Knox murder case was a highly publicized and controversial criminal case in Italy, involving American student Amanda Knox and her Italian boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, who were convicted of the murder of Knox’s British roommate, Meredith Kercher, in 2007. The case drew significant international attention and generated widespread debate over the guilt or innocence of the defendants.

On November 2, 2007, the body of Meredith Kercher was discovered in her apartment in Perugia, Italy. She had been killed in a brutal attack, and Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito were identified as suspects. They were arrested and charged with murder, along with a third individual, Rudy Guede.

The prosecution’s case relied heavily on forensic evidence, including DNA samples taken from the crime scene, which they argued linked the defendants to the murder. They also presented evidence of inconsistencies in the defendants’ alibis and statements to the police.

The defense team argued that the prosecution had not presented enough evidence to prove the defendants’ guilt beyond a reasonable doubt, and that the forensic evidence had been mishandled and contaminated. They also argued that the police had coerced false confessions from Knox and Sollecito.

In December 2009, Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito were convicted of the murder of Meredith Kercher and sentenced to 26 and 25 years in prison respectively.

In 2011, the Court of Appeals overturned the conviction, acquitting both Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito of the murder of Meredith Kercher, citing lack of evidence and inconsistencies in the prosecution’s case.

However, in 2013, the Italian Supreme court annulled the acquittal, ordering a new trial, the new trial confirmed the guilt of Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito and increased the sentence to 28 and 25 years, respectively.

In 2015, the Italian Supreme Court definitively confirmed the acquittal of Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito, stating that there were not enough evidences to sustain their guilt.

The case has continued to generate significant international interest and debate in the years following the acquittal, with many people feeling that the verdict was a miscarriage of justice.
